Fall and Winter Care of Roses.

Rake leaves from around your plants to prevent the spread of diseases.

Zones and some of Zone 7 should follow these additional fall and winter protection guidelines: For Hybrid Teas and Floribundas: Cover the crowns with a mound of soil about 6" high, then cover the plants and mound with straw.

Don't prune your roses at this time, unless there is a concern that canes and branches could be broken.

Apply fish emulsion to your roses around mid-month, one tablespoon mixed with one gallon of water. If you have more than 50 rose bushes, a siphon device (such as Syphonex or Hyponex) or a submersible pump is recommended for application.

Later in the month, 1/2 cup of alfalfa pellets can be spread around each rosebush, a quarter cup for minis.
